St Philip's has a Sunday school (Sunday Club) which meets during the main 9.30 Sunday.
(Excepting on the Sundays when an all-age service takes place in Church).
ARTISTIC AND FUN!
On the 22nd February, the day after Ash
Wednesday, we had a Children’s Workshop which turned out to be a kind of ‘Crash
Course on Lent’. It was great fun, if a bit hectic, it’s never too late for
pancakes so the youngsters tried their hand at that (most of them were
certainly good at eating them afterwards!) We made paper ‘Palm’ Crosses,
which were duly decorated and taken home to be used as bookmarks, Mothering
Sunday cards and the altar frontal as shown in the picture, not to mention the
hand bell ringing and short act of drama which went towards our final act of
worship.
Simon, our resident artist, designed the altar frontal and
everyone tore up coloured paper and glued the pieces on to designated areas of a
large sheet of paper with an outline of the design – a kind of ‘mosaics by
numbers’. We didn’t have time to finish but the Guides kindly took on the task
and the result is a bit like life…up close it looks very bitty and mixed up but,
from a distance, it’s quite amazing and has been admired by everyone who has
seen it in situ. At the centre of the frontal there is a stylized figure of
Christ on the cross with sandy coloured swirls surrounding him – these represent
the desert/wilderness and temptation, the sandy coloured swirls are interspersed
with purple ones which represent God and the Spirit then, in the bottom corner
is a red swirling pattern – the devil working away and, finally, a gold angel in
the top corner. Overall, the whole thing helped us to think about Lent …what
and why, and what it means for us today.

There will be another Children’s Workshop between 2.00 –
4.00 p.m. on the Tuesday of Holy Week, 3rd April….watch this space
for news of that event.
